5 Tips for Living with Cross-Cultural Roommates

One thing you might not always remember about yourself—is that you have a culture. The way you dress, what you like to eat, how you talk, even how you sleep is part of your culture! It’s part of the way you grew up. It formed when you hung out with your friends, or when you did science projects in class, even the songs you sing (or what language you sing them in) make up your culture. …

Why a Kiwifruit is Not a Kiwi | Tips on New Zealand Culture

“You wouldn’t call a passion fruit just a 'passion', would you?” I've always known that green, fuzzy snack was a “kiwifruit”, not a kiwi—my brothers made sure of it. We all grew up in the USA, but our parents are originally from New Zealand. For Those Who Feel Out of Place

“Just go over to the house sometime, they’d love to meet you!” Fresh to Tauranga, New Zealand, friends had raved about the YWAM Furnace community. My new university was right next door to where their current Discipleship Training School was running, and I wanted to meet them. I’d heard about DTS all my life and…

When Jesus Ruined my Fear of Missing Out

On Friday afternoon on my Discipleship Training School, we were headed to community outreach. As I jumped into the van, I hit the the rim of the door—and gave myself a concussion. I regained consciousness quickly, but my brain was still a bit fuzzy. So I had to take it easy for a few days. On Mondays we have Community Night, where everyone gathers for worship and often a guest speaker. I really didn't want to miss out, but I also knew deep down that I needed to stay in my room. I kept fighting that thought, even though I knew Holy Spirit was nudging me to stay.…
